The so-called e-tailer, which sells kitchen appliances and televisions online from its warehouse in Crewe, said revenue from its website jumped 38 per cent three months to 31 December 2014 compared with the same time the previous year. Total sales, which include sales fulfilled on behalf of third party retailers, rose by 26 per cent in the quarter. The figures exclude Germany, where it launched in October and where AO said it was “operationally ahead of plan”. The group said sales of “audio visual categories” such as televisions, which the company started selling for the first time in May last year, “built well” in the period, adding it was “particularly pleased with performance in the run-up to Christmas”.Shares rose six per cent to close at 262.50p, as the City welcomed AO’s strong results. However, the share price is still below its original offer price of 285p. AO World’s float was met with great success in February last year, with shares soaring on the first day. The stock has since had a choppy year, along with other tech stocks in London and the US, on fears that a bubble was forming in the industry. The refinancing is required in order for the group to continue as a going concern,” said chairman Peter Hambro. In order for the refinancing to be implemented, the approval of both bondholders and shareholders is required.“The quorum required is holders of two-thirds of the principal amount of bonds by value, and the majority needed in favour is 75 per cent of those voting. At the time of this announcement, a group of bondholders representing over 71 per cent of the principal amount of bonds have already signed up to a recapitalisation agreement giving their support to this refinancing,” Hambro said.“The next important event is the shareholders’ meeting, which is scheduled for 26 February 2015, at which the company needs the approval of 75 per cent of those shareholders who vote in order to effect the refinancing.” The company has a market capitalisation of less than £30m. Its net debt is $900m which it plans to shrink to $700m once the refinancing is completed. Treasury Select Committee to launch HSBC tax inquiry as HMRC calls in the police

first_img whatsapp Treasury Select Committee to launch HSBC tax inquiry as HMRC calls in the police whatsapp Share Thursday 12 February 2015 10:53 am Catherine Neilan center_img The Treasury Select Committee has confirmed it will launch an inquiry into HSBC’s Swiss private bank. The committee, headed by Conservative MP Andrew Tyrie, will take oral evidence from both the bank and HMRC executives as it attempts to get to the bottom of the hot potato issue that has dominated this week.  Tyrie said: “Banks have repeatedly told the Committee that, since the crisis, they have put in place reforms to ensure they operate on the basis of sharply improved standards.  “The Committee will need reassurance that they have done so in private banking. The Committee will also examine whether part of the banks’ apparent ‘solution’ – de-risking – may have created another problem, that of unreasonably denying customers access to banking services.” Already this week the committee grilled Financial Conduct Authority chairman Martin Wheatley over the scandal.  During a pre-planned session Labour MP John Mann pushed Wheatley, questioning how it was possible that the City watchdog knew nothing about it.  HSBC has been investigated by authorities across the world, but you, as the conduct authority, in this country have not even been informed about what HMRC have been investigating for five years.    How can you possibly be working with the bank from 2013 when you don’t have full knowledge of what they’ve been doing, and another part of the government does know, but isn’t informing you? In addition, the BBC is reporting that HMRC is planning to meet with the police and the Serious Fraud Office later in the week. It has been a bruising week for HSBC since a huge cache of leaked files were published on Sunday apparently showing that its Swiss division had helped thousands of clients worldwide evade tax. During Prime Mininster’s Questions, David Cameron and Ed Miliband traded insults over who was more tainted by association with clients of HSBC’s Swiss arm.   Miliband also clashed with Conservative party treasurer Lord Fink, alleging he was involved in tax avoidance.  Fink had initially said he would sue Miliband for slander, but subsquently told the Evening Standard he had engaged in “vanilla” tax avoidance, and that “everyone does tax avoidance at some level”.  Tags: Company HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) HSBC Holdings Show Comments ▼last_img read more

Email slip-up reveals Bank of England’s investigation into what would happen if UK left the EU

first_img whatsapp Email slip-up reveals Bank of England’s investigation into what would happen if UK left the EU The Bank of England is carrying out a confidential investigation into what would happen if the UK left the European Union (EU), an email accidentally sent to The Guardian has revealed. It discloses details of a special task force set up by the central bank to look into the economic consequences of a UK exit, or “Brexit”.  The email was originally sent by a senior official to four executives at the bank, but it was accidentally forwarded to the newspaper. It directs recipients to keep quiet about the task, called “Project Bookend”, to anyone not directly involved. This includes James Talbot, head of monetary assessment at strategy division. “Jon’s proposal, which he has asked me to highlight to you, is that no email is sent to James’s team or more broadly around the Bank about the project,” the email stated. The bank today issued a statement acknowledging the investigation, but said the news “should not come as a surprise”, and that it would “not be responsible” to talk bout the work publicly until the appropriate time arrives.  “While it is unfortunate that this information has entered the public domain in this way, the Bank will maintain this approach.” As part of his pre-election campaign, Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to hold an in-out referendum on membership in 2017, but recent reports suggest it could be brought forward to 2016. This would reduce the trade deficit. “Sustaining a strong and durable recovery in the UK requires rebalancing away from public support toward private sector-led demand, along with greater reliance on external demand,” the IMF said.  However, some economists say the trade deficit is predominantly due to weak demand from abroad, where economies have struggled to grow, and strong demand from the UK for foreign goods.  whatsapp Video Carousel – cityam_native_carousel – 426 00:00/00:50 LIVERead More George Osborne’s budget deficit elimination plan gets IMF seal of approval Show Comments ▼ Ad Unmute by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailUndoSwift VerdictChrissy Metz, 39, Shows Off Massive Weight Loss In Fierce New PhotoSwift VerdictUndoMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekUndoPost FunKate & Meghan Are Very Different Mothers, These Photos Prove ItPost FunUndoComedyAbandoned Submarines Floating Around the WorldComedyUndoForbesThese 10 Colleges Have Produced The Most Billionaire AlumniForbesUndoGameday NewsNBA Wife Turns Heads Wherever She GoesGameday NewsUndozenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comUndoEquity MirrorThey Drained Niagara Falls — They Weren’t Prepared For This Sickening DiscoveryEquity MirrorUndo Sharelast_img read more

And at least two hawks are expected to break rank and vote in favour of an interest rate hike. The so-called Super Thursday meeting will see the central bank publish its monthly decision on interest rates, the minutes from the debate and the quarterly Inflation Report at the same time. The minutes, which provide a breakdown of how the nine-strong monetary policy committee voted along with a summary of their debate, are usually published two weeks after the rate decision. The Bank’s policymakers are expected to keep rates on hold at 0.5 per cent. However, analysts expect a split for the first time this year, with two or three, including Martin Weale and Ian McCafferty, predicted to vote for a rate rise.
